Password managers are a subscription category that security experts universally recommend — yet many people either use the free browser-built-in option or none at all. Here is the honest comparison.

Why You Need a Password Manager for Subscriptions Every subscription is a separate account with a separate password. Reusing passwords means a breach at one service exposes all others. A password manager generates unique, strong passwords for every subscription — and autofills them so you never need to remember them.

1Password ($36/year Individual, $60/year Family) The premium option. Best design, travel mode (hide sensitive data at border crossings), Watchtower breach monitoring, SSH key management for developers. Worth it for families and security-conscious users.

Bitwarden (Free / $10/year Premium) Open-source, fully audited, EU data storage options. The free tier includes unlimited passwords on unlimited devices — genuinely free, not a trial. Premium adds TOTP 2FA codes and encrypted file storage. Best value in the market.

Dashlane ($33/year) Strong, with a VPN included. But Dashlane dropped its free tier in 2022 — no free option.

The Recommendation **For most people:** Bitwarden free. No limitations that matter for standard use. **For families or Apple ecosystem users:** 1Password Family — the design and sharing features justify the cost. **Avoid:** Browser built-in password managers for subscription accounts — they don't sync across devices as reliably and lack breach monitoring.

Tracking Your Password Manager Subscription Add your password manager to SubTracker. Set a 14-day renewal reminder. At renewal time, verify you're on the right plan tier — password manager companies regularly add features to paid tiers that may make upgrading worthwhile.
