Which subscription tracker works in India?

Most bank-linked trackers do not connect to Indian banks. What works instead, and why the RBI e-mandate rules make this easier than elsewhere.

The short answer

Rocket Money and Emma do not serve Indian banks, so automatic detection is largely unavailable — but India needs it less than most markets. The RBI e-mandate framework requires a pre-debit notification before recurring card charges, which means you are already warned before most subscriptions renew. Pair that with a manual tracker and the gap closes.

Why the usual recommendations do not apply

Most subscription-tracking advice assumes a bank-linked tool. Rocket Money is US-focused and Emma covers the UK and parts of Europe; neither connects to Indian banks. Aggregator coverage here is a different landscape entirely.

That rules out the standard answer, and it matters less than it would elsewhere — because of a regulatory feature that most markets do not have.

The pre-debit notification changes the problem

Under the RBI's e-mandate framework for recurring card transactions, you receive a notification before a recurring debit is taken, with the option to act on it.

That is, in effect, the renewal reminder that people elsewhere pay for — delivered by the payment rail rather than by an app.

Two consequences worth drawing out. The forgetting problem is smaller here. You are told before most card-based subscriptions charge, which is the single thing a tracker exists to do.

What remains is the list itself. Knowing the total, spotting duplicates, seeing what a year costs, catching price rises. A notification tells you a charge is coming; it does not tell you that you are paying for two cloud storage plans.

Also note the framework's limits: it applies to recurring card and UPI mandates, so subscriptions billed through the App Store, Google Play or a foreign provider on a different rail may behave differently.

What actually works here

A manual tracker. Works identically in every market because nothing is detected. SubTracker supports INR among 25 currencies, and the free plan covers unlimited subscriptions with CSV import and a calendar feed.

Your bank's or UPI app's mandate list. Most now show active e-mandates in one place. Free, authoritative for what it covers, and routinely overlooked.

The two app stores. iPhone Settings, your name, Subscriptions; Google Play, Payments and subscriptions. This is where subscriptions bought inside apps live, and they show on a statement only as a charge from Apple or Google.

A spreadsheet, genuinely adequate under about fifteen subscriptions.

The specific things to watch

Foreign providers billed in USD. Common here, and the rupee amount moves with the exchange rate even when the subscription price has not changed. Record the amount in the currency you are actually charged — a converted figure will drift and eventually disagree with your statement for reasons unrelated to the provider.

Mandate revocation is separate from cancellation. Revoking an e-mandate stops the debit; it does not end the contract with the provider. Cancel with the provider first, then check the mandate list.

Annual plans. The pre-debit notification helps, but a twelve-month charge still needs deciding on, and a notification a day or two ahead is not the same as thirty days' notice.

Manuelle Werkzeuge stellen diese Verbindung nie her.

Was es kostet

Frequently asked questions

Does Rocket Money work in India?+

No. It is built around US financial institutions and does not connect to Indian banks. Emma covers the UK and parts of Europe rather than India. Manual trackers work identically in any market because nothing is detected.

Do I get warned before a subscription charges in India?+

For recurring card and UPI mandates, generally yes — the RBI e-mandate framework requires a pre-debit notification. That covers much of what a renewal reminder does elsewhere, though app-store and foreign-provider billing may work differently.

Where can I see my active mandates?+

Most banking and UPI apps now list active e-mandates in one place. It is free and authoritative for what it covers, and it is the first place to look before installing anything.

Does revoking a mandate cancel the subscription?+

No. It stops the debit without ending the contract, so the provider may still pursue the balance. Cancel with the provider first, then check the mandate list to confirm nothing is still authorised.
