Which subscription tracker works in the Netherlands?

Dutch bank coverage is good and iDEAL and SEPA make the record clean. What to use, and why the Wet van Dam means you need less warning than elsewhere.

The short answer

Dutch banks are well covered by aggregators and the SEPA direct debit list gives you most of the record for free. The bigger point is legal rather than technical: under the Wet van Dam the notice period after the initial term is capped at one month, so you need much less advance warning here than in Germany or the UK.

The tooling is the easy part

Aggregator coverage of Dutch banks is good, and iDEAL and SEPA produce a cleaner recurring-payment record than card-based markets do.

Your own banking app shows SEPA direct debits ("incasso's") clearly. Free, no third party, and it covers gyms, insurance, utilities, press subscriptions and a good deal of everything else — because direct debit is the default here in a way it is not in the US.

A bank-linked tool will generally connect. Emma covers Dutch banks; check the specific institution before assuming.

A manual tracker works regardless and holds nothing about your spending. SubTracker supports EUR among 25 currencies with a permanent free tier.

Start with the bank view. It is free and, for direct-debit subscriptions, authoritative.

Why you need less warning here

This is the part that distinguishes the Netherlands and it is worth understanding before setting anything up.

Under the Wet van Dam, in force since December 2011, a subscription cannot be silently renewed into a new fixed term after the initial period. It becomes open-ended with a notice period of at most one month. You must also be able to cancel by the same route you signed up.

Practically: whatever a gym contract says about three months' notice after the first year, it is not enforceable against you.

That changes the reminder arithmetic. In Germany or the UK an annual subscription needs a thirty-day-plus warning because the notice period demands it. Here, after the initial term, one month is the ceiling — so a thirty-day reminder is comfortable rather than tight.

Press subscriptions are the exception: dailies, weeklies and monthlies may renew for up to three months at a time, and publications with fewer than twelve issues a year may require up to three months' notice.

There is a fuller treatment of the rules on the dedicated Dutch cancellation-rights page.

The three blind spots that remain

Legal strength does not help with visibility, and these are unaffected by any of the above.

App Store and Google Play billing. Shows on a statement only as a charge from Apple or Google. Check at source.

Annual plans charged over a year ago. Outside any connected history window until they renew.

Subscriptions on a partner's account. Household duplication — two cloud storage plans, two music subscriptions — is invisible to any single-person view, however good the bank data is.

What to set up

Twelve months of statements as the discovery pass, plus the incasso list, the two app stores and PayPal.

Thirty-day reminders on annual plans, comfortable rather than tight given the one-month ceiling.

Cancel by the route you subscribed, in writing, and keep the confirmation. It is a legal entitlement here, not a favour.

Reverse the direct debit as a backstop — SEPA allows reversal of an authorised debit within eight weeks without giving a reason — but only after a documented cancellation. It stops payment without ending the contract.

Manuelle Werkzeuge stellen diese Verbindung nie her.

Was es kostet

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to track subscriptions in the Netherlands?+

Start with your banking app's SEPA direct debit list, which is free and authoritative for anything billed that way — which here is most things. Then keep the full list, including app-store and card subscriptions, wherever it will warn you.

How much notice do I need to give in the Netherlands?+

At most one month after the initial contract term, under the Wet van Dam, regardless of what the contract says. Press subscriptions are the exception, with up to three months for publications issued fewer than twelve times a year.

Can a Dutch gym require three months' notice?+

Not after the initial term has expired. At that point the membership must be cancellable with no more than one month's notice. The initial term itself remains binding.

Do bank-linked trackers work with Dutch banks?+

Generally yes — coverage is good and SEPA produces a cleaner recurring-payment record than card-based markets. Check the specific institution, and remember that app-store and PayPal billing stay invisible regardless.
