Is Spotify Premium worth it in 2026?

Yes if you listen offline or on more than one device; the Family plan changes the answer for most households. What the free tier actually costs you.

The short answer

Yes if you listen on a commute, offline, or in the car — the free tier's shuffle and advert constraints make those genuinely worse. For a household the Family plan changes the calculation entirely: it covers up to six people for roughly the price of two individual plans, and two individual Spotify accounts in one home is one of the most common wasted subscriptions there is.

What Premium actually removes

The free tier is not a trial. It is a working product with three deliberate constraints, and whether Premium is worth it depends on which of them you hit.

Adverts. The obvious one and the least important for most people.

Offline listening. No downloads on free. If you commute underground, fly, or drive anywhere with poor coverage, this is the constraint that matters.

On-demand playback on mobile. Free is shuffle-oriented on phones. If you want to play a specific track rather than something adjacent to it, that is Premium.

If none of the three bites — you listen at a desk on wifi and are relaxed about what plays — the free tier is genuinely adequate and there is no reason to be talked out of it.

The household question comes first

Before deciding on Premium at all, check whether anyone else in the house pays for music.

Spotify Family covers up to six people for around the price of two individual plans, and everyone keeps their own account, library and recommendations. Two individual accounts in one home is not a slightly worse deal — it is roughly double.

This is one of the most common household subscription duplicates, and it happens the same way every time: both people subscribed before living together, on different cards, and nothing ever prompted a comparison. Neither person's own account shows anything wrong.

The same check applies across Apple Music and YouTube Premium. Whichever service you land on, the family tier is almost certainly the right shape.

Where Spotify is worth more than the alternative

Discovery. Discover Weekly, Release Radar and the algorithmic playlists remain the benchmark. If finding new music is why you listen, this is the reason to pay Spotify specifically rather than a competitor.

Cross-platform consistency. It works identically on iOS, Android, Windows, web, cars, consoles and nearly every speaker. Spotify Connect's device handoff is still the smoothest in the category.

Podcasts and audiobooks are bundled in, which for some people replaces a separate subscription — and if you already pay for one, that is worth checking before renewing it.

When to cancel

You listen at a desk on wifi and do not care what plays next. Free covers it.

You have not opened it in a month. Check the app's own listening history rather than guessing.

You also pay for Apple Music or YouTube Premium. YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music; paying for both is a duplicate that survives because they feel like different products.

You are on an individual plan in a household with others who pay for music. Consolidate to a family tier — this is the largest single saving available in this category.

Frequently asked questions

Is Spotify Premium worth paying for?+

Yes if you listen offline, on a commute or in a car, since the free tier has no downloads and is shuffle-oriented on mobile. If you listen at a desk on wifi and are relaxed about what plays, free is genuinely adequate.

Is Spotify Family worth it?+

For any household with two or more listeners, almost certainly. It covers up to six people for roughly the price of two individual plans, and everyone keeps their own account and library.

Should I pay for Spotify and YouTube Premium?+

Usually not. YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music, so the two overlap substantially. It is a duplicate that survives because the two feel like different products rather than competing ones.

What does the Spotify free tier actually restrict?+

Adverts, no offline downloads, and shuffle-oriented playback on mobile rather than on-demand. Which of the three matters depends entirely on where and how you listen.
