Subscription cancellation rights in Ireland
Irish consumers have EU-level protections plus the CCPC as a regulator. The 14-day withdrawal right, what it does not cover, and where to complain.
The short answer
Ireland applies EU consumer law, so the fourteen-day withdrawal right on distance contracts is the strongest single tool — but it applies to new contracts, not to leaving one you have had for a year. For ongoing subscriptions the position rests on the contract and on unfair terms rules, with the CCPC as regulator and the small claims procedure as an accessible forum.

The fourteen-day right, and its limits
The protection people reach for first is the withdrawal right on distance contracts: fourteen days from conclusion of the contract, no reason required.
It is genuinely strong and it is routinely misunderstood in two ways.
It applies to new contracts, not to exits from old ones. Fourteen days after signing up, not fourteen days from whenever you decide you want out. A subscription you have held for eleven months is governed by its terms, not by this.
Digital content can fall outside it. Where you have expressly consented to immediate performance and acknowledged losing the withdrawal right — which is what the checkbox at the start of a streaming or software signup usually is — the right can be lost. That consent has to be obtained properly, which is occasionally where the argument lies.
Within its scope it is close to unanswerable. Outside it, you are on the ordinary contract terms.
What covers an ongoing subscription
The contract itself, subject to the rules on unfair terms in consumer contracts. A term causing a significant imbalance to the consumer's detriment, contrary to good faith, is not binding. A disproportionate notice period on a rolling monthly service is the kind of thing that engages this.
Transparency requirements. Terms have to be in plain, intelligible language. A renewal condition that is technically present but practically undiscoverable is vulnerable on that basis.
Prohibitions on misleading commercial practices, which cover how a subscription's price, duration and renewal are presented.
Ireland does not have a Wet van Dam equivalent setting a hard maximum notice period. The position is closer to the UK's than to the Netherlands'.
Where to go
1. The provider, in writing, with a date. Ask for written confirmation. Keep it.
2. CCPC — the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. Consumer advice and the body that enforces consumer law. It does not resolve individual disputes but takes complaints and acts on patterns. ccpc.ie.
3. Small Claims Procedure. Through the District Court, low fee, designed to work without a solicitor, for claims up to €2,000. Accessible enough that the threat of it is meaningful.
4. European Consumer Centre Ireland, if the trader is established in another EU or EEA state. Cross-border subscription disputes are common and this is the route built for them.
5. Chargeback. For a charge after a documented cancellation. Bring the record.
Cross-border is the normal case
Most subscriptions an Irish consumer holds are with companies established elsewhere — often the Netherlands, Luxembourg or the United States, sometimes with an Irish entity in between.
Within the EU and EEA this works in your favour: the consumer protections travel with you, and ECC Ireland exists specifically to handle disputes with traders in other member states.
With a US-established trader it is harder in practice, and the routes that do not depend on the company cooperating matter more. App Store and Google Play subscriptions are cancelled at Apple or Google, both of which operate refund processes. Your card issuer is the other lever.
Was in jedem Fall hilft

Do I have 14 days to cancel any subscription in Ireland?+
Fourteen days from concluding a distance contract, not from whenever you decide to leave. It applies to new subscriptions, and it can be lost for digital content where you expressly consented to immediate performance and acknowledged losing the right.
Is there a maximum notice period for subscriptions in Ireland?+
No statutory maximum comparable to the Dutch one-month rule. An excessive notice period may be challengeable as an unfair term in a consumer contract, but that is an argument rather than a bright line.
Where do I complain about a subscription in Ireland?+
The CCPC for consumer law issues, the Small Claims Procedure through the District Court for claims up to €2,000 without a solicitor, and European Consumer Centre Ireland where the trader is established in another EU or EEA state.
What if the subscription company is based outside Ireland?+
Within the EU and EEA, ECC Ireland handles cross-border disputes and the protections still apply. For a US-established trader, cancelling through the App Store or Google Play where applicable, and a chargeback with your card issuer, are the routes that do not depend on the company cooperating.
