Black Friday subscription deals: read the renewal, not the discount
Most Black Friday subscription deals discount the first term only. How to read the renewal terms, when an annual deal pays off, and how to not forget it.
The short answer
A Black Friday subscription deal is usually a discount on the first term only; the subscription then renews at the regular price unless you act. It is worth taking for a service you already use all year, and only if you note the renewal date the day you buy. For a service you might not use, a cheap first year is just a delayed full-price charge.

Subscription discounts are the easiest Black Friday deals to sell and the easiest to regret. The price in the banner is real, but it is the price of the first month, the first three months or the first year. What happens after that is in the terms, and it is almost always the same thing: the subscription continues, at the regular price, on the card you used.
What the banner leaves out
Three phrases carry most of the meaning. "For the first year" or "for 3 months" means the discount ends on a date you will not be reminded of. "Then" followed by a price is the renewal price — the number that matters for the next year. "Auto-renews" or "until cancelled" means nothing stops it unless you do.
Before buying, find the renewal price and the date it applies from, and decide now whether you would pay that price. If the answer is no, the deal is only worth it if you are certain you will cancel in time.
When an annual deal is genuinely good
A discounted annual plan is good value for a service you already pay for monthly and use every month. You were going to pay anyway; the deal lowers the cost and removes eleven billing events. The arithmetic is simple: compare the discounted annual price with twelve times what you pay now. Our annual vs monthly calculator does it in one step.
An annual deal is poor value for a service you want to try, or use in bursts. Paying for a year up front removes the option to stop after two months, and the discount rarely makes up for ten unused ones.
The renewal a year from now
The most expensive part of a Black Friday deal is often the following November, when it renews at full price on a card statement nobody reads closely. Annual renewals are easy to miss precisely because they happen once: there is no monthly charge to remind you the service exists.
The fix is the same for every deal: put the renewal date somewhere you will see it, with a reminder a week or two before. If the service lets you turn off auto-renewal immediately while keeping the paid term, doing that on day one is the safest default — you can always renew deliberately.
Stacked trials and "free months"
Many deals this week are free months or extended trials rather than discounts. They convert to paid subscriptions automatically. If you take several, write down each end date, and see our guide to free trials started over the holidays for the date arithmetic that catches people out.
A short checklist before you buy
Is this a service you use every month already? What is the renewal price, and from what date? Can you turn off auto-renewal now and keep the discounted term? Where will the renewal date live so you see it in time?
Keeping track of what you signed up for
SubTracker records each subscription with its billing cycle and next renewal date and shows your yearly total, so a deal bought this week is visible next November. SubTracker does not connect to your bank — you add each subscription once yourself, which takes about ten minutes and is the reason nobody else sees your transactions. Renewal reminder emails are a Plus feature; new accounts get them for the first 14 days without a card.

Do Black Friday subscription deals renew at full price?+
Usually, yes. Most discount only the first term and then renew at the regular price automatically. The renewal price is stated in the terms, often after the word "then". Check it before buying and decide whether you would pay it.
Is a Black Friday annual plan worth it?+
For a service you already use every month, a discounted annual plan usually saves money. For a service you want to try or use occasionally, paying a year up front removes your ability to stop early and is rarely worth the discount.
How do I avoid being charged when the deal ends?+
Note the renewal date the day you buy, set a reminder one to two weeks before it, and turn off auto-renewal immediately if the service allows you to keep the paid term. You can always renew deliberately later.
