How the break-even works
Divide the annual price by the monthly price. The result is the number of months after which the annual plan becomes the cheaper choice. If a service costs twelve times its monthly price per year, there is no discount at all; most annual plans sit around ten months.
The number that matters is not the discount but your usage. People overestimate how long they will keep a new subscription, and an annual plan turns that optimism into a prepaid commitment.
When monthly is the better deal
Choose monthly when you are trying something new, when your use is seasonal — a sports season, a show, a project — or when the category changes quickly, as AI tools currently do. Paying a little more per month buys the option to stop.
Check the annual terms before you switch
Some plans that look monthly are annual commitments billed monthly, and leaving early can cost a fee. Others refund an annual plan only within a short window after renewal. Read the plan name in your billing settings before relying on either.
