The default: no refund, access until period end

For most monthly subscriptions, cancelling stops the next renewal rather than refunding the current period. You keep access until the paid period ends. That is why cancelling early — the moment you decide — costs nothing in most cases.

Where refunds do exist

Refunds appear in narrower situations: shortly after an annual renewal, within a statutory cooling-off period for new subscriptions in some jurisdictions, or where a provider states a policy of pro-rated refunds. App store purchases follow the store’s refund process rather than the provider’s.

Immediate loss of access

A minority of services end access as soon as you cancel. For those, timing matters: cancel after you have used what you paid for, and export anything you need first.
