How to Cancel LA Fitness
Cancel LA Fitness without paying for months you did not want. Notice period, minimum term, early-exit fees, and a template letter if they require writing.
The short answer
You keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for, so cancelling early does not lose you time. Phone and email requests are generally not accepted as a cancellation. The form is the cancellation.

Allow time before your billing date
Send it well ahead of your next billing date β allow at least five business days for a mailed form.
Before you cancel
- β’Phone and email requests are generally not accepted as a cancellation. The form is the cancellation.
- β’In 2025 the FTC sued the company that operates LA Fitness, alleging that cancelling was made unduly difficult. Keep proof of every step.
- β’Charges can appear on statements as Fitness International rather than LA Fitness.
Refunds
The current billing cycle is not refunded; access continues until the paid-through date and billing stops after that.
Before you cancel entirely
If cost rather than usage is the problem, ask about a freeze or hold before cancelling. Most gyms offer one, and it avoids paying a new joining fee later.
The category with real contracts
Fitness is the only category on this site where cancellation is a contractual process rather than a button, and treating it like a streaming subscription is how people end up paying for another year.
Three things make it different. Minimum terms of 12 or 24 months are standard. Notice periods of 30 days are common and some contracts require considerably more. And a meaningful number of operators still require cancellation in writing, by post, to a specific address β an email or an in-app request may have no legal effect at all.
Find the anniversary date
The single most important piece of information is your contract anniversary and the notice window before it. Many contracts auto-renew for a further full term unless notice is received a set number of days beforehand. Miss that window by a day and you are committed for another year regardless of whether you attend.
Work backwards from the anniversary date, add the notice period, and act before that. If the contract is unclear, ask the operator in writing for the exact deadline and keep the reply.
Freezing is often better than cancelling
If the problem is cost or a temporary inability to attend rather than a permanent decision, ask about a freeze or hold. Most operators offer one for a small monthly fee or free for medical reasons. It avoids paying a new joining fee when you return, which frequently exceeds the amount saved by cancelling.
Early exit on medical or relocation grounds
Most jurisdictions require gyms to release members who relocate beyond a reasonable distance or who have a medical reason preventing attendance. This usually requires documentation β a doctor's note or proof of a new address. It is worth asking, because operators rarely volunteer that the option exists.
If you are charged after cancelling
- β’Keep the cancellation confirmation. An email or a screenshot showing the date is the document that resolves this, and it is much easier to save now than to reconstruct later.
- β’If you are charged after cancelling, contact the provider first with the confirmation attached. Most reverse the charge without argument when presented with a timestamped confirmation.
- β’If the provider does not resolve it, your bank or card issuer can reverse the payment. Card networks treat a charge after a documented cancellation as a straightforward chargeback, and the confirmation is the evidence you need.
- β’For recurring card payments you can also instruct your bank to block future payments to that merchant. In the EU and UK, banks are required to honour this instruction even if the merchant continues to request payment.
