How to cancel a gym or fitness membership

Cancellation guides for gyms and fitness apps — notice periods, minimum terms, written cancellation and the freeze option most gyms offer.

Gym memberships are the subscription people most often fail to cancel on the first attempt. Unlike apps, many gyms run real contracts: a minimum term, a notice period, and sometimes a requirement to cancel in writing or in person.

The practical consequence is timing. A cancellation sent a few days too late can roll a membership into another billing cycle or, where annual terms apply, another term. Reading the contract for the notice period before you send anything is the single step that saves the most money.

Fitness apps are different: most behave like any other app subscription and are cancelled through the app store or the provider’s website. The guides below separate the two, because treating a gym contract like an app subscription is how people end up paying for months they did not want.

Before you cancel: four checks

  1. 1.Read the notice period. Find the notice period and minimum term in your contract before cancelling. They decide your last payment.
  2. 2.Cancel the way the contract says. If the gym requires written notice, send it in a form you can prove — email with confirmation or tracked post.
  3. 3.Ask about a freeze first. If the problem is a temporary break, most gyms offer a freeze that avoids a new joining fee later.
  4. 4.Stop the payment only after confirmation. Cancelling a direct debit without cancelling the contract does not end it and can create a debt.

Common questions

Can I cancel my gym membership online?

Increasingly yes, but not everywhere. Some gyms still require written notice or a visit. Each guide below states the route the gym documents.

Why do I still have to pay after cancelling my gym?

Because of the notice period. A request today usually ends the membership after the notice window, not immediately. This is normal, not an error.

Is freezing better than cancelling?

If you expect to return within a few months, often yes: it avoids paying a joining fee again. If you do not, cancel — a freeze usually still costs something.
