Do gift subscriptions auto-renew? What to check as giver and recipient

Some gift subscriptions end when the gift runs out; others renew on the giver’s or the recipient’s card. How to tell which kind you have, and how to stop it.

The short answer

It depends on how the gift was bought. A gift code or gift card usually ends when its value is used up, unless the recipient adds a payment method, in which case the subscription can continue on their card. A gift bought as a recurring subscription in the giver’s name can renew on the giver’s card. Check the purchase confirmation on both sides.

Gift subscriptions are popular at the end of the year, and they behave in two different ways that look identical from the outside. Which one you have decides whether anyone will be charged next year, and who.

Kind 1: prepaid codes and gift cards

A prepaid code covers a fixed period or amount. When it is used up, the subscription normally ends — unless the recipient’s account already has a payment method on file, or they add one, in which case many services simply continue billing them at the regular price.

For recipients, the question to answer is whether your account has a card attached. If it does, note the date the gift period ends and decide before then whether to continue.

Kind 2: recurring gifts in the giver’s name

Some gift subscriptions, common with magazines, boxes and memberships, are set up as a recurring subscription paid by the giver, with the recipient as the delivery or account address. These can renew automatically on the giver’s card at the end of the term.

For givers, the purchase confirmation is the place to look. Words like "renews", "continuous" or "until cancelled" indicate kind 2. If you only meant to give one year, turn off renewal in your own account now.

When the gift is a device bundle

Gifts of phones, tablets or TVs often include trials of streaming, music or cloud storage that start when the device is set up — in the recipient’s account, on their payment method. These behave like any other free trial; see holiday free trials for the date arithmetic.

How to check in two minutes

Recipient: open the subscription settings in the app or the app store, check whether a renewal date and a payment method are shown. Giver: open the confirmation email, look for renewal language and the account where it can be managed.

Stopping an unwanted renewal

Turn off auto-renewal in the account that pays — the recipient’s for kind 1 with a card attached, the giver’s for kind 2. Access normally continues until the end of the paid or gifted period. Cancellation steps for common services are in our cancellation guides.

Tracking gifted subscriptions

Recording a gift with its end date turns an invisible conversion into a visible date. SubTracker lets you record a subscription with a custom billing date and a note, and shows it among your upcoming renewals. SubTracker does not connect to your bank — you add each subscription once yourself, which takes about ten minutes and is the reason nobody else sees your transactions.
