Is iCloud+ worth it?

For many iPhone owners, iCloud+ is less a choice than a question of which tier. The free allowance fills up quickly once device backups and a photo library are involved.

What you are actually paying for

iCloud+ is storage first: backups, photos, files and messages. It also includes privacy features such as Private Relay and Hide My Email, which some users value independently of the storage.

Backups are the strongest reason

A full device backup means a lost or broken phone can be restored completely. Without enough storage, backups silently stop, and people discover it when they need one. That failure mode is a good reason to pay for enough space even if you do not care about photos in the cloud.

Family sharing

iCloud+ can be shared through Family Sharing, with each person’s data kept private. A household paying for several individual plans nearly always saves by moving to one larger shared plan.

Check for Apple One first

Apple One bundles iCloud+ with other Apple services. If you already pay for Apple One, you already have iCloud+ storage; buying it separately is paying twice. The reverse question — whether Apple One is worth it — is covered separately.

Paying for both Apple and Google storage

Households mixing iPhones with Gmail and Google Photos commonly pay for iCloud+ and Google One. Decide where your photos live; that usually determines which storage you need.

Signals it is worth it

You want full device backups, your photo library lives in iCloud, and the household shares one plan.

Signals it is not

You already have iCloud+ through Apple One, your photos live in Google Photos, or several family members each pay for their own plan.
