How to spot subscriptions on a bank or card statement

A practical way to find recurring charges on statements: what to look for, how platform charges hide the real service, and how to catch annual renewals a statement misses.

The short answer

Take three months of statements for every card and account you use, and mark every charge that repeats with a similar amount at a regular interval. Expand platform charges — Apple, Google, PayPal, Amazon — in their own lists, because the statement does not name the service. Then search your email for annual renewals, which three months of statements cannot show.

Statements are where most forgotten subscriptions are found, and also where many stay hidden. The method below finds the obvious ones quickly and the hidden ones deliberately.

Take three months, every account

Pull ninety days for every card and bank account you actually use, including the card saved in an app store or on a streaming account. Three months shows monthly subscriptions three times, which makes the pattern unmistakable, and catches most quarterly ones once.

What a subscription looks like

Look for the same merchant at roughly the same day each month, with the same or a similar amount. Small amounts deserve the most attention: they survive for years precisely because they are easy to ignore. Slight variations in amount are normal for taxes, currency conversion and price changes.

Platform charges hide the real service

Some lines name a platform rather than the service. Apple charges appear as an Apple entry, Google Play charges typically start with "Google", and PayPal charges with "PayPal" — the service itself is listed only in that platform’s own records. For each platform line, open its list: Apple, Google Play, PayPal and Amazon.

Charges you do not recognise

Statement descriptors are often shortened or use a company’s legal name rather than its brand. Search the descriptor text in your email first; a receipt usually names the service. If you cannot identify a charge, your bank or card issuer can tell you more about the merchant, and can help dispute charges you did not authorise.

What three months cannot show

Annual subscriptions appear once a year, and a ninety-day window will usually miss them. Search your email for "renewal", "receipt", "invoice" and "your subscription" over the past twelve months. Domain names, software licences, cloud storage and memberships are typical annual renewals.

Several cards make it harder

Subscriptions spread across cards are easy to lose, because no single statement shows them all. If that is your situation, see tracking subscriptions across several credit cards.

Write it down once

The work of reading statements is only worth it if the result is kept. List each subscription with its amount, billing cycle and next date; next time, you compare the statement to the list instead of starting over. The full five-source method is in how to find all your subscriptions.

Where to keep the list

SubTracker is built for exactly that list: each subscription with its billing cycle, next renewal and the card or wallet it is paid from, with the yearly total. SubTracker does not connect to your bank or to Apple, Google, PayPal or Amazon — you add each subscription once yourself, which takes about ten minutes and means nobody else sees your transactions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find subscriptions on my bank statement?+
