Google Drive vs Dropbox: which is better value?
Dropbox is better at syncing files; Google Drive is better value if you use Gmail and Docs. The decision usually turns on which you already live in.
The short answer
Google Drive, for most people, because Google One bundles storage with Gmail and Photos you are already using — you are paying for one thing instead of two. Dropbox wins on one specific job: reliable, fast sync of large files across desktops, particularly with people outside your organisation. If that is your work, the price difference is not the deciding factor.

The honest split
Dropbox is a sync product. Its file-syncing engine remains the best in the category — fast, reliable, good at large files, good at conflict resolution, good at sharing with people who do not use your ecosystem. That is a real technical advantage and it has survived a decade of competition.
Google Drive is a storage tier attached to things you already have. Google One covers Drive, Gmail and Photos in one allowance. If you use Gmail at all, some of that storage is already committed, which changes the arithmetic before any feature comparison.
The question is therefore not really "which is better". It is whether you are paying for storage as a standalone product or as part of something else.
Where the money actually goes
Compare on total storage across all the services you use, not on the headline tier price.
If you use Gmail: your inbox counts against the Google One allowance. Buying Dropbox does not free that up — you end up paying Google for the inbox and Dropbox for the files. One allowance covering both is usually cheaper than two.
If you do not use Gmail: the calculation is fairer, and Dropbox's sync quality is worth more relative to price.
Check the family tier before deciding either way. Both offer household sharing, and two individual plans in one home is the most common wasted cloud spend there is.
Annual billing is materially cheaper on both, typically by a couple of months' worth. Worth doing once you are confident which you want.
Where Dropbox is worth paying more for
Four cases where the sync quality earns the difference.
Large files, all day. Video, RAW photos, design files, CAD. Dropbox's delta sync uploads only the changed part of a file, which on a 4 GB file is the difference between seconds and minutes.
Collaborating outside your ecosystem. Sharing with clients who use Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android in unpredictable combinations. Dropbox is the most neutral option.
A shared folder that must not conflict. Dropbox's conflict handling is more predictable than the alternatives, which matters when two people are genuinely working on the same directory.
You do not want your files in the same account as your email. A legitimate separation preference, and not a small one.
Where Google Drive wins outright
You already pay for Google One. Then the storage is bought and the question is settled.
You work in Docs, Sheets and Slides. Native, no conversion, no versioning surprises.
Photos matter to you. Google Photos is bundled and its search remains the best in the category.
Android. Better integrated, by a distance.
You want one bill. One allowance across email, files and photos is one thing to track instead of three.
