Is Xbox Game Pass worth it?

Microsoft restructured Game Pass in October 2025 into Essential, Premium and Ultimate for console, alongside a separate PC Game Pass. The old names — Core, Standard — map onto Essential and Premium.

The break-even is simple

Count the games you played last year that are in the library, and what they would have cost to buy. If the answer exceeds a year of the tier you would need, Game Pass pays for itself. If you play one or two big releases a year, buying them is usually cheaper.

Choosing a tier is about release timing

Ultimate is the tier with day-one access to new first-party releases, plus cloud gaming and bundled extras such as EA Play. Premium offers a large library, with first-party games arriving later rather than on launch day. Essential is primarily online multiplayer with a smaller library.

If you are happy to play big releases a while after launch, Premium covers most of the value at a lower price. Ultimate earns its premium for players who want new first-party games immediately and use cloud play or the bundled services.

PC-only players

PC Game Pass is a separate plan for Windows players and is often the sharpest value for someone who does not own a console.

Play in bursts, pay in bursts

There is no annual commitment required. Many players get most of the value by subscribing when there is a backlog to play and cancelling in between.

Signals it is worth it

You play several library games a year, you use the tier-specific features you pay for, and you would otherwise buy those games.

Signals it is not

You play one game repeatedly, you pay for Ultimate but never use cloud play or day-one releases, or the console has been idle for months.
