Is my bank app enough to track subscriptions?

Bank recurring-payment views are free, already installed and better than they used to be. The three things they still cannot do.

The short answer

Often yes, and it is the option nobody checks first. If your subscriptions all run through one account and your bank shows recurring payments, that is free, involves no third party, and covers most of the job. It fails on three specific things: multiple cards, app-store billing, and warning you before a renewal rather than reporting it after.

Start here before paying for anything

Bank recurring-payment views have improved substantially, particularly at Monzo, Starling, Revolut and N26, and the high-street banks have followed. In the UK, Direct Debits are itemised in every banking app under the Direct Debit Guarantee — that alone is a free and complete inventory of anything billed that way, and most people never look at it.

If everything you pay for runs through one account, this may be the whole answer. It costs nothing and no third party is involved, which is a better privacy position than any tracker including a manual one.

The three things it cannot do

Multiple cards. Your bank sees your bank. A subscription on a second card, a business card or a partner's card is invisible, and household duplication lives exactly there.

App Store and Google Play billing. The charge appears as a single payment to Apple or Google with no service named, so it cannot be decomposed. Check at source: iPhone Settings, your name, then Subscriptions.

Warning you in advance. This is the decisive one. A bank shows what has been charged. A tracker warns you before the charge, and the whole point is to act while acting is still possible — seven days for monthly plans, thirty or more for annual ones.

The combination that works

Use the bank view as the discovery pass. It is free and it is accurate for what it can see.

Then check the three blind spots by hand: the App Store and Google Play subscription lists, PayPal automatic payments, and twelve months rather than three of statements — annual plans charge once and a short window structurally cannot contain them.

Then keep the resulting list wherever it will warn you. That is a different job from discovery and does not need bank access at all.

If after all that you have twelve subscriptions on one card and you check your banking app weekly, you genuinely do not need another tool.

Was sich beim Wechsel ändert

Ein manueller Tracker weiss, was du eingetippt hast: Anbieter, Betrag, Verlängerungsdatum.

Rocket Money kontaktiert Anbieter in deinem Namen.

Everything is on one account and you check it regularly. Then your bank is doing the job free, and a second tool is overhead. This page is not trying to talk you out of that.

Was es kostet

Frequently asked questions

Can my bank app show all my subscriptions?+

It shows recurring payments on that bank's accounts. It cannot see other cards, and app-store billing appears only as a single charge from Apple or Google with no service named.

Where do I find my Direct Debits?+

Itemised in your banking app under the Direct Debit Guarantee in the UK. It is a free and complete list of anything billed that way — gyms, insurance, utilities and many subscriptions — and it is routinely overlooked.

Do I need a subscription app if my bank shows recurring payments?+

Not if everything runs through one account and you check it regularly. The gap is advance warning: a bank reports what was charged, whereas the point of tracking is to act before the charge.

Is using my bank app more private than a subscription tracker?+

Yes, for the recurring-payments view specifically — the data never leaves your bank and no third party is involved. That is a stronger position than any tracker, including a manual one.
