Looking for a Subby alternative

Subby is a lightweight manual tracker. What to use when you outgrow one device, one person, or a list without reminders.

The short answer

Lightweight manual trackers are genuinely good at what they do and share the same three ceilings: one device, one person, and reminders that are easier to dismiss than to act on. Which of the three you hit first determines what to move to — and if you have hit none of them, moving is not an upgrade.

The three ceilings

Every minimal subscription tracker runs into the same limits, and they arrive in a predictable order.

One device. Fine until you want to check something at a laptop, or your household is not all on the same platform.

One person. The expensive one. Household duplication — two cloud storage plans, two music subscriptions bought independently — is invisible to any single-person list, and no amount of polish on that list changes it.

Reminders you dismiss. A push notification is easy to ignore and easy to dismiss without acting. Email survives a dismissal, and a calendar entry sits where you already look.

If none of the three has bitten, stay. A tool you actually open beats a better one you do not.

What each ceiling points to

Device: something with a web version. SubTracker runs in a browser and installs as a PWA on iOS and Android.

Person: a shared workspace where each member has their own login and reminders route to whoever owns each line. SubTracker's Family plan covers ten people at $9.90/month.

Reminders: per-subscription lead times over email, plus a calendar feed. Seven days for monthly, thirty or more for annual because notice periods of thirty days are common.

All three at once: that is the normal case after a year or two, and it is worth exporting first so the move is one import rather than an evening of typing.

What not to trade away

Minimal trackers are pleasant precisely because they ask little. Moving to something larger is only worth it if the larger thing does not become a chore.

Four fields carry almost all the value: provider, amount and currency, interval and next renewal, and who pays. Categories, tags and notes are useful later and are how a list dies of maintenance in week two.

If a tool requires more than that before it is useful, it will not survive contact with a busy month.

Was sich beim Wechsel ändert

Ein manueller Tracker weiss, was du eingetippt hast: Anbieter, Betrag, Verlängerungsdatum.

Rocket Money kontaktiert Anbieter in deinem Namen.

You wanted something with no account. Some minimal trackers require no signup at all, which is a real feature. SubTracker needs an account because sync, reminders and shared lists all require stored state.

Was es kostet

Frequently asked questions

When should I move off a lightweight subscription tracker?+

When one of three things happens: you need it on a device it does not cover, a second person in the household needs to see it, or a renewal you meant to cancel went through despite being correctly recorded.

Do minimal subscription trackers send reminders?+

Usually push notifications only, which are easy to dismiss without acting. Email survives a dismissal and a calendar feed puts the renewal where you already look, which is why more than one channel works better than a better single one.

Can a simple tracker handle a household?+

Not really. Household duplication typically sits across two different cards bought independently, so a single-person list cannot surface it however well maintained it is.

What fields does a subscription tracker actually need?+

Provider, amount and currency, interval and next renewal, and who pays. Everything beyond those is useful later and is the usual reason a list stops being updated within a fortnight.
